Selecting a Memorable Gift for Children’s Birthday Parties – Tips for Fantastic Kids’ Presents

Hey, Moms!  Does iIt seems like like you are always shopping for presents for birthday parties?  We’ve got some tips for selecting the perfect gift for a child’s birthday.  Like most events in our lives, planning ahead is the key. Here are some additional pointers:

1.      When you receive the party invitation, check your calendar and decide if your child will attend.  This will give you plenty of time to select a gift, rather than waiting until the last minute.

2.      Decide on a budget for the gift.  Is this a casual school friend, a special friend or a member of your family? This may help you in deciding how much to spend.

3.      Let your child help in selecting the gift.  Pick out 2-3 items in your price range, then ask your child what gift they think their friend would like the best.

4.      Choose items that can be personalized – kids of all ages are thrilled to receive gifts that have their name or initials on them.  They will know it was chosen especially for them.  Toys are great, but often have a short shelf life.  We recommend personalized beach towels, lap desks or even a tote with the child’s name.

5.      It can be fun to choose a theme for the gift.  For instance, choose an art theme.  Give a child’s apron with his/her name and an art set with paints, brushes and paper.  For a chef’s theme, again choose a personalized apron, add measuring spoons and cups and a child’s cookbook.

6.      Let your child make a card for the present.  Have him or her draw a picture and sign his or her name on a plain white note card or even construction paper cut to size.  Scribbles of different colors can decorate the front of the gift card if your little artist is still perfecting her skills; mom can add her name and birthday wishes to the inside of her masterpiece.” 

Don’t forget the package presentation.  Gift-wrap or creative packaging can be part of the fun of choosing just the right gift.  For our chef’s theme, choose a large plastic mixing bowl rather than a gift bag.  Add the apron, cooking utensils and tissue paper stuffed in between the items. The card could read “Cook Up Some Fun for Your Birthday.”

Easter is Almost Here!

Are you ready for Easter?  If you’re hosting Easter dinner, have you started to plan your table?  We have a few tips for you to dress up your Easter table.

1. Add a Lazy Susan – we found a neat device that turns any tray or platter into a Lazy Susan.  Simply place this device under your tray or platter, and, ta-da, instantly it spins!  We think this is fab!
2. Personalized table linens – for that special touch, use a linen table runner that has your monogram or a single initial.  We also recommend linen cocktail squares with a single initial.
3. Centerpiece – choose a piece that works with your theme.  Will you be formal or casual?  Will you have mostly adults, children or both?  If you opt for fresh flowers, take a favorite crystal bowl or other short piece (so your guests can see across the table) to your florist and ask him/her to design an arrangement in your container that fits with your theme and budget.  You may want to include a few natural-look speckled eggs (made of plastic or resin, available at most craft stores) tucked into the greenery.

Gifts Galore

The girls of Simply Done Gifts sure put the rest to the test this week and Gifted With Style.  Imagine, a family of four (Mom, Dad, Son – 5 and Daughter - 3) with 6 Birthday parties all on one Saturday. 

We started the day running to our first party for a dear friend turning 5.  The party was wonderful and started the day off right…what a relief.  I was particularly patting myself on the back as the mother of the birthday boy gave our personalized gift great praises.  My son gifted his friend a versatile insulated tote that the birthday boy won’t have to fight for…his name is plastered on the front.  I suggested that we use ours for everything from lunches to a video game case for the PSP.  And just for fun I included a great art set with the tote.

Off to party number two…Pump it Up here we come.  This party celebrated another joyous boy turning 5.  After much thought about the “needs” of this child, I decided a personalized beach towel and sling bag fit the bill.  The family seems to do some traveling and with Spring Break around the corner they could be heading to the Bahamas and the towel would definitely come in handy.

 Are we half way there yet? Not yet!  Off to a party for my daughter’s precious girlfriend turning 3.  I knew the perfect gift as soon as I received the invitation.  How cute is it to see little chefs at work in, you guessed it, there own adorable apron with name?  These aprons are great because they are PVC coated and can be used as Kitchen Couture or as a protector of little Picasso’s clothes.  She loved the fabric – turquoise with pink poodles.  Did I mention I included store bought cookie dough so Mom and future chef could break it in right away?

Yes, we are half way done with an exceptional day and I’m worn out.  I’m down for a nap while my husband takes over for the next one.  The boys head off to a terrific pirate party for a great mate turning 5.  This little boy is high on style so I thought the awesome camo lap desk would serve double duty…for the studious and stylish.  The kids had a busy but outstanding day and now it is time for the parents’ fun to begin.

 My husband has some great friends going over the hill…the big 4-0.  Two parties, one a surprise Casino Party and the other an over the top party for an awesome couple staring INXS.  We decided to go in “Dallas” style to these parties and loaded up in a limo with another couple and off we went.  We hit the surprise party first and boy was he surprised…what fun!  This family is big on the University of Arkansas so I capitalized on this and gave some amazing Tervis Tumblers with, you guessed it, the Razorbacks logo on them.  These tumblers are indestructible, they replace them for free if they do get broke, and keep cold things cold and hot things hot.  I have a set of these for the pool and they are always in use.  We didn’t stay here long because the star of the night was waiting…INXS and our dear “old” friends.

What a way to end an exceptional day…”so slide over here and give me a warning…”  This party topped all parties, INXS and some great “old” friends.  For this party we opted for just a card and thought after the birthday bonanza was over we would send a great bouquet of fresh flowers with words of praise and thanks.
